What Is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy uses high-energy sound waves (also called pressure waves) directed at painful or damaged tissues. This mechanical stimulation increases blood flow, reduces inflammation, breaks up adhesions, and promotes cellular repair.
At Lake Country Health Center, we offer three types of shockwave therapy, each targeting different depths and types of tissue for optimal results.

Our Shockwave Therapy Options

Radial Pulse Therapy (RPT)

  • Best for: Superficial soft tissue, larger muscle groups
  • How it works: Emits a broad dispersing wave that stimulates healing over a wider area
  • Benefits: Increases blood flow, breaks up tight muscle knots, promotes natural tissue repair
  • Comfort Level: Generally well-tolerated with mild discomfort

Acoustic Pulse Therapy (APT)

  • Best for: Chronic soft tissue pain, scar tissue, and circulation support
  • How it works: Uses gentle, low-energy acoustic pulses to activate metabolic processes and cellular repair
  • Benefits: Speeds recovery, improves tissue oxygenation, and is non-invasive with no down time
  • Comfort Level: Mild to Moderate Intensity, always to patients comfort level/tolerance

Focused Shockwave Therapy (FST)

  • Best for: Deep tissue injuries, calcified tendons, long-standing conditions
  • How it works: Delivers precise, high-energy sound waves into a small focal point
  • Benefits: Breaks up calcifications, increases stem cell activity, and treats hard-to-reach areas
  • Comfort Level: Moderate intensity, but highly effective—especially for chronic or resistant pain

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does shockwave therapy feel like?
Most patients describe it as a tapping or pulsing sensation with some warmth to it. Some feel mild to moderate discomfort during treatment, but sessions are short and to patient tolerance.
Q: Is there downtime after treatment?
No! You can return to normal activities right away, though we may advise you to avoid strenuous activity for 24–48 hours.
Q: How soon will I see results?
Some patients feel relief after the first session. For chronic conditions, results often build gradually over 4–8 treatments. Dependent on your specific case, you may need additional visits for full healing benefits.
Q: Is it covered by insurance?
This therapy is generally not covered by insurance plans. Shockwave therapy is $60 per treatment and currently offered in our therapy package of 10 visits at $50 each. Funds in a Health Savings Account or Flexible Spending account can cover this cost.
Q: What’s the difference between radial and focused shockwave treatment?
Radial is great for surface-level or broad areas of pain. Focused therapy is ideal for pinpointing deep or calcified tissues. Your provider will help you choose what’s best for your needs.
